Jim Hopson is one of those rare musicians who adapts effortlessly to any style. Equally at home in jazz, classical, pop, and world music, he also plays the entire low brass family: alto/tenor/bass/valve trombones, euphonium, bass trumpet, tuba, and Swiss Alphorn. A lyrical improviser and skilled reader, Jim is known as a player who can instantly add excitement and finesse to any ensemble. A consummate pro, he specializes in providing music for special events (weddings, conferences, festivals), and is represented by Vantastic Entertainment.

Born in to a family of professional musicians, he began his musical training at age three. He moved to Vancouver in 2007, after completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Trombone Performance (with distinction) at the University of Victoria, studying with the great Canadian trombonist Ian McDougall. While at UVic, Jim played principal trombone with the UVic Orchestra, was a featured soloist with both the UVic Wind Symphony and Jazz Orchestra, and was a finalist in the University’s Concerto Competition. He has been awarded cash prizes and scholarships in solo and chamber music competitions.

Jim has since established himself as an extremely versatile first call soloist, sideman and arranger. As a touring musician, he has performed throughout the world: Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Mexico. His playing has been broadcast on local, national, and international radio & television. Current local and touring projects include: Ten Souljers, S-Bahn Band, Flock & Hopson, and Group of Eight.

Upon getting to hear more of his music I was pleased to learn that his versatility is even more impressive’ - Alex Meixner, Grammy-nominated accordion virtuoso
